The funds allocated to McNair Scholars are intended to support the completion of your research project and your development as a scholar. Graduate Program Campus Visit awards are specifically allocated for you to visit prospective graduate programs. Awards may be up to but not exceeding $500.
Eligibility Requirement: In order to make use of McNair Scholars funds, you must be in good standing with the program. This means that you:
- are currently enrolled in classes at UNC and in good academic standing (min. 3.0 GPA).
- regularly attend and participate in all program activities, including classes, workshops/seminars, one-on-one conferences, and other scheduled events.
- are up-to-date on course assignments and required program documentation.
Application Check List: Each of the below elements must be included with your application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Application form - must be complete and legible in order to be considered for funding.
- Cover letter explaining how visiting this program will contribute to your graduate program application/decision process and your future career.
- Visit documentation—confirmation from the program of your visit and tentative activities planned (e.g., admissions interview, meet with a professor, campus tour, etc.).
Completed applications and attachments are due no later than one week PRIOR to travel. Please submit applications and required materials to the UNC McNair office.
If you receive funding, you will be reimbursed for approved costs following your grad school visit (see below for “approved costs”).
TO BE REIMBURSED: Save all receipts during travel. Within 7 DAYS of your return, visit the McNair Scholars office to remit receipts and complete paperwork.
